My Insights During the Mass Training of Teachers on Child Protection Policy
(Just want to share here some of my insights during our INSET training)
Topic: Incidence of Violence (Case Analysis)
There is a great concern about the incidence of violent behavior among children and adolescents. This complex and troubling issue needs to be carefully understood by parents, teachers, and other adults. Violent behavior in a child at any age always needs to be taken seriously. It should not be quickly dismissed as "just a phase they're going through!"
Violent behavior in children and adolescents can include a wide range of behaviors: explosive temper tantrums, physical aggression, fighting, threats or attempts to hurt others. There can be some ways that we can do to help a child that shows a violent behavior and we should not tolerate it. Whenever a parent or other adult is concerned, they should immediately arrange for a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified mental health professional. Early treatment by a professional can often help. In addition, the following strategies can lessen or prevent violent behavior:
• Prevention of child abuse (use of programs such as parent training, family support programs, etc.)
• Sex education and parenting programs for adolescents
• Early intervention programs for violent youngsters
• Monitoring child's viewing of violence on TV/videos/movies
Topic: The Role of the Department of Education in Preventing Child Sexual Abuse
Preventing Child Sexual Abuse--this is a very good topic for us to be solved as educators since this is one of the rampant problems in our society. Although this may not have a big percentage. As teachers, we really have a big role to protect our children.
Recognizing and reporting child maltreatment are important to prevent abuse and neglect from continuing or recurring. Schools also must be involved in working to prevent maltreatment from ever occurring at all. Schools are in a unique position to address this problem by virtue of the staff 's training and expertise, the school's position in the community, and the availability of physical facilities. A school's involvement in prevention can be divided into school-based programs, school-community programs, and individual action on the part of educators.
Topic: Understanding Human and Child Rights
Human as we are, we have our rights and we are being protected by the law. Even children have their rights and they should need to practice their rights. They should be given care, love, time, attention, and most of all PROTECTION! Children’s rights are human rights. We educators are their protectors in the school.
Their may be other forms of violence against children. Across the world children are denied their human rights, including for example, their right to education. Children routinely face other violence - at school, in institutions meant for their protection, in juvenile detention centres and too often in their own homes.
Everyone has the right to education—which should be available free to all at least at the primary level. Education is also indispensable in realizing other human rights.
Topic: Values Clarification
Our values are our ideas about what is most important to us in our life —what we
want to live by and live for. They are the silent forces behind many of our actions and decisions. The goal of "values clarification" is for us to become fully conscious of other’s influence, and to explore and honestly acknowledge what we truly value at this time in our life. We can be more self-directed and effective when we know which values we
really choose to keep and live by as an adult and as teachers we teach values to children, and which ones will get priority over others.
Topic: Child Development
This topic about child development is a concern for us teachers especially when we are on the field of teaching. The early years of a child's life are very important for his or her health and development. Parents, health professionals, educators, and others can work together as partners to help children grow up to reach their full potential. Children need to have the different developmental stages in life- intellectually, emotionally and physically — so, too, does her ability and skills and use language.
Topic: Positive Approach to Child Discipline
We should impose positive discipline to children not punishment. It is important to emphasize that eliminating punishment does not mean children should be allowed to do whatever they want. We need to provide opportunities for children to experience responsibility in direct relationship to the privileges they enjoy. Otherwise, they become dependent recipients who feel the only way to achieve belonging and significance is by manipulating other people into their service. Some children develop the belief that, "I’m not loved unless others take care of me." Others may develop the belief that they shouldn’t try because they can’t do very much that doesn’t invite blame, shame, and pain. It is saddest when they develop the belief, "I’m not good enough," because they don’t have opportunities to practice proficiencies that would help them feel capable. These children spend a great deal of energy in rebellion, trying to prove themselves, or just giving up.
Adult leadership and guidance is very important. However, children deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. They also deserve the opportunity to develop the life skills they need in an atmosphere of kindness and firmness instead of an atmosphere of blame, shame, and pain.
Topic: Understanding Bullying
Bullying is an issue that impacts students every day. Whether they are being bullied, or just witnessing it, bullying affects their physical and emotional health and impacts academic success. Every bullying situation is different. Some kids engage in physical bullying, while others cyber-bully. Still others are relationally aggressive or engage in sexual bullying. We should learn how to recognize bullying and identify risk factors that can go a long way in bullying prevention. We can prevent some bullying problems by some of these interventions- proper orientation about bullying, friendships, learning to get along well with peers and others.
